A university graduate with a 'bright future' was caught with a large knife following an early hours altercation in the city centre.Zachariasz Ziolkowski, 23, said he had the knife for 'self-protection' after being attacked twice previously.Ziolkowski pulled out the knife in an bid to 'defuse' the situation, after he and a friend became involved in an altercation with other men outside Spar in St Mary's Gate, near Deansgate.Police were called at around 2.30am on February 12, and as Ziolkowski was taken to the floor, a knife fell out of his waistband.The knife was described as a 'sharp bladed kitchen knife', more than six inches long."It is just the sort of knife that if used to stab another would kill or cause very serious injury," Judge.
