Tributes have been paid to a former St Joseph’s College pupil who went on to conquer the world of motorsport.Sir Frank Williams, who died on Sunday at the age of 79, was the founder of Williams F1 team, which has won more than 100 grand prix.He was born in the north of England and attended St Joseph’s College in Dumfries in the 1950s when it was a private boarding school.In 2015 he returned to his alma mater with daughter Claire, who was deputy team principal.St Joseph’s head teacher Bernadette Jones said: “Our deepest sympathy is extended to the Williams family following the death of past pupil Sir Frank Williams.“We have very fond memories of the visit of Sir Frank and his daughter Claire to St Joseph’s College in 2015.
