The Batman's John Turturro Turned Down 'The Penguin' Return Over 'Violence Towards Women,' Showrunner Responds

Fans thought that John Turturro might reprise his The Batman role as Carmine Falcone for the HBO series The Penguin, however, that did not end up happening. Mark Strong ended up playing the role in a flashback sequence. John ended up explaining why he turned down the chance to return to the franchise. In the show, there was a lot of violence towards women, and that’s not my thing,” John told Variety about passing on the series after starring in the film.

His character was violent in the 2022 film as well, however, John reasoned: “It happens off-screen. It’s scarier that way.” He did remark that being a high-demand actor, “You can’t do everything you want to.” Showrunner Lauren LeFranc then responded to John‘s comments, saying she completely understands where he’s coming from. Lauren told The Wrap in response, “I completely respect an actor who doesn’t want to take on a role for whatever their personal reasons.

I only want people to join our show who are excited and want to further the story we’re trying to tell. I think Mark Strong did a really fantastic job.
