Tesco named 'priciest supermarket' for basics for the first time in six months

Tesco has been found to be the priciest supermarket from a comparison of basic items - knocking Morrisons off the top spot for the first time in six months.As households continue to cut back on spending due to the rising cost of living this year, it can be really handy to know which supermarkets are the best value for your groceries.Which is exactly why Manchester Evening News has been looking at the prices across eight basic items including a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, teabags, butter, beans, chicken breasts and mince.The latest weekly comparison has found that Morrisons, which has held the title of the most expensive supermarket since June, has been overtaken by Tesco, which now costs £11.50 for the basic items.

Just four months ago, Tesco was found to be the cheapest option out of all the supermarket chains, when its bill came in at just £10.42 - which was 10% cheaper.The change follows a drop on two of the products at Morrisons, with Savers beans down from 29p to 25p and Savers coffee reduced by 2p a pack.It also comes just after Morrisons has announced another major price cuts campaign, with 130 prices across its Saver range set to be reduced in a bid to help families budgets go that bit further.Tesco has also announced a new price-lock commitment on more than 1,000 products until Easter, as the supermarket says that it aims to increase the number of value lines that it sells.
