Low-cost airline easyJet has sparked outrage by demanding £1000 for the very last seat on the final flight to Scotland’s Euro 2024 opener in Germany.
It raises the prospect of fans facing the most expensive match in Scottish football history. The Tartan Army began scrambling for air tickets and hotels as soon as Steve Clarke’s men were drawn against the tournament’s hosts in Munich on June 14.And supporters were already facing increased match day ticket prices of up to £500 due to the honour of opening the soccer extravaganza at the Allianz Arena.Hotel costs have also soared in Munich due to demand from travelling fans and thousands of German supporters arriving in the Bavarian capital this summer.
But after promising to lay on extra flights to help fans make the trip, easyJet has hiked prices. On June 12, easyJet wants £917 for a one-way flight from Edinburgh to Munich.
Once you add a bag at an additional £70, the cost comes in at just under £1000. This month, departing January 30, the same flight is available for just £13.99.Hamish Husband, spokesman for the West of Scotland Tartan Army, said: “It has taken the shine off the honour of opening the tournament.“The Scottish FA have said 100,000 fans are going to travel to Germany for the finals.
