Omicron is rapidly spreading and the variant has now become the dominant strain in the UK. On Christmas Eve, cases of Omicron jumped from 696 to 6,154 in the space of a week in Scotland as the variant spreads through the population over winter.

A total of 121,371 Covid cases were recorded in the UK on December 24 - the largest daily increase since the pandemic began.

While some symptoms - including a dry cough - are similar, people are being urged to be aware of the more unusual signs which may appear over the festive period.
