It was heartbreaking – but sadly not surprising – to hear of the pure vitriol aimed at Obi-Wan Kenobi star Moses Ingram, who has been subjected to ‘hundreds’ of racist messages since the new series launched on Disney Plus last month. But it was more heartwarming to see her co-star Ewan McGregor show support by speaking out on her behalf, as well as the official Star Wars Twitter account publicly condemning the trolling.
Finally, after years of Disney being at the centre of race rows regarding some of its other non-white stars, it felt like a step in the right direction in cracking down on the hostility towards Black actors in these prominent roles.
In their statement, the Star Wars team said: ‘We are proud to welcome Moses Ingram to the Star Wars family and excited for Reva’s story to unfold.
If anyone intends to make her feel in any way unwelcome, we have only one thing to say: we resist. ’ They added, very on-brand: ‘There are more than 20 million sentient species in the Star Wars galaxy, don’t choose to be a racist. ’ Ewan also said in his video: ‘Moses is a brilliant actor, she’s a brilliant woman, and she’s absolutely amazing in this series.
