Southport stabbings: Teenager arrested following major incident with children among victims
dailyrecord.co.ukA 17-year-old boy has been arrested after at least eight people were injured, including children and adults, in a “horror movie” knife attack in Southport.Merseyside Police said the stabbings are not being treated as terror-related after a local councillor said one child is feared dead.
The force said a 17-year-old boy, from the village of Banks, was arrested and is set to be questioned following the “major incident” at a property in Hart Street, Southport, north of Liverpool, at about 11.50am on Monday.
One witness told the PA news agency that he called the police to an address behind The Hart Space studios, where a Taylor Swift-themed yoga class for children in school years two to six, aged between six and 11, was taking place.Earlier this afternoon Alder Hey Children's Hospital declared a major incident following the shocking attack, with its A&E department describing itself as "currently extremely busy" this afternoon.The Liverpool Echo reports that possibly up to ten others, including both children and adults, were taken to hospitals for treatment to major trauma injuries.A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that a 17-year-old male from Banks, who was arrested in connection to the stabbing in Southport this morning, Monday 29 July, remains in police custody and will be questioned about the incident."At this early stage, enquiries are ongoing to establish the motive for this tragic incident and we would urge people not to speculate while the investigation is ongoing."We can also confirm that the incident is not currently being treated as terror-related and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident."Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp
