Sam Mendes has found his follow-up to his Oscar-winning drama, 1917, teaming up with Olivia Colman and Searchlight for a 1980s-set love story. Mendes will direct Empire of Light, which he also wrote, with Colman set to star in the drama.

It’s been well over a year since Sam Mendes’ “1917” debuted in theaters and would go on to earn good box office and acclaim, including a stunning 10 Oscar nominations (winning 3). Clearly, Mendes is taking his time with choosing what will be his next feature.

Searchlight Pictures and Sam Mendes are teaming on the director’s next project with Searchlight boarding Empire of Light with Mendes on set to direct and Olivia Colman in negotiations to star. This will mark Mendes first film since his Oscar-nominated 1917 and will also mark the first time both he and Colman have worked together. The film will also re-team Mendes with cinematographer Roger Deakins, who won an Oscar for his work on 1917.
