Scottish Government announces 8,656 new covid cases in last 24 hours

The Scottish Government's latest figures for Scotland have confirmed 8,656 new covid cases in last 24 hours. There are currently 1,360 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 18 being treated in intensive care.

To date 4,438,528 people have received their first vaccination with 4,162,451 having a second jab and 3,451,358 have received a third dose or booster.The figures come as it emerged Spring booster jabs will be offered to Scots at the highest risk of covid from Monday, March 7.

The latest stage of the vaccination programme in Scotland includes all people aged 75 and over and care home residents. Letters are also being sent out to parents and guardians inviting children aged five to 11 for their first vaccination appointments.

Children in this age group with specific medical conditions have already been invited.Health secretary Humza Yousaf said: "We know that those in high-priority groups are at higher risk of serious illness from COVID-19, and I therefore welcome the start of the rollout which will offer a further dose to these people."Vaccination has been our most effective tool against coronavirus."
