STEPPING out on the red carpet under the spotlight of the global media, teenager William Ruane might have thought the photographers’ flashbulbs were lighting the road to his future.

The 16-year-old was bedazzled as much by the fuss his appearance at Cannes Film Festival caused as he was by the allure of the life he imagined as a successful actor.

Fed by a media frenzy on the back of his debut in Ken Loach’s Sweet Sixteen at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, he’d have been forgiven for dreaming of days ahead giving Connolly-esque interviews from LA, romanticising his early doors on the streets of Castlemilk.Today, William knows better.
