Rugby hero Doddie Weir donates £165k to Scots charity fighting for MND cure

Rugby legend Doddie Weir has made a £165,000 donation to a Scots motor neurone charity to help find a cure for the disease.

The 49-year-old dad-of-three, who announced he was battling the illness three years ago, pledged the sum from his own foundation to Glasgow -based charity Funding Neuro, which has helped pay for the development of a prototype of a new drug.

The ex-Scotland and Lions player, from Edinburgh, has now made two major donations to the charity though his My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

MND, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS, is a progressive condition which causes muscle to waste away. Since his diagnosis in 2017, Weir has helped raise more than £5 million through his foundation and in February the Scotland
