A father who saw red drove into his son’s stolen motorbike while chasing the people he guessed had nicked it. Peter Merrett’s son previously had his motorcycle stolen and it had been recovered from the same area Merrett was driving through on the day of the collision.

The dad drove to the location on the probability of finding the bike and it was there he saw two “boys” riding the motorbike.

This week he admitted driving dangerously in pursuit of the vehicle before accidentally colliding with it from behind. The 39-year-old, who has eleven previous convictions, was sentenced to four months suspended for 18 months with rehabilitation and an 18 month driving ban.

At Newcastle Crown Court, it was revealed how Merrett, of Forest Hall, had gone to the Longbenton area of North Tyneside on September 11, 2021.He saw the bike coming in the opposite direction and turned his car around then chased after it at speed, striking a wall, causing damage to his car at one point.
