An old interview with James Earl Jones is shedding new light on the “Star Wars” films. The actor spoke with the American Film Institute in an interview which was posted in 2009 about his casting in the role of Darth Vader’s voice in “Star Wars: A New Hope”. “George [Lucas] wanted, pardon the expression, a dark voice,” Jones said. “So he hires a guy born in Mississippi, raised in Michigan, who stutters.
And that’s the voice. That’s me.” In a shocking reveal, Jones revealed he was paid less than 10 thousand dollars for one of the most iconic roles. I thought that was good money. And I got to be a voice on a movie!” he added. The actor didn’t clarify his paygrade for the later films.
It turns out they also had different visions for how to play the legendary character in the sequel “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back”.
