Popular pub landlord Jock Ross has called time at The Farmers Arms in Thornhill after 26 years. A joiner with Buccleuch Estates, he decided to take a gamble and purchase the village’s only pub, taking over the reins on September 6, 1997 – the same day as Princess Diana’s funeral.

From the start he has championed live music in Thornhill and has had almost every local band play the venue at some point. As well as having a successful music scene in the pub, Jock also ran and played in the darts team, racking up an impressive 20 league titles with the Farmers Arms A team – his latest one coming at the tender age of 70.

His son, Andy, said: “Along the way punters have enjoyed numerous pub trips to Belgium and Holland as well as away days at the horse racing in York and Newcastle. “Over the years he also organised an annual big draw for the Grand National which proved that successful that there are now three ‘big draws’ that take place in the pub every April.” He was given a farewell party with his favourite band – and local supergroup – Bad Reputation playing him out.
