UTA and Investcorp Pact to Invest in Tech and Lifestyle-Focused Startups

The deal extends the ties between the talent agency and the investment firm that previously had an equity stake in UTA. Investcorp exited as a UTA owner in July. The production banner run by Brad Pitt and Dede Gardner has tapped Moelis & Co. to shop for a buyer or potential investors. The company has a first-look deal for TV with Amazon Studios and a pact with MGM Studios for film. Reps for Moelis & Co. declined comment. Reps for Plan B could not immediately be reached for comment. Plan B was hatched in late 2001 as a partnership between Pitt and actor Jennifer Aniston, about four months after the two were married in July 2001. Pitt eventually took over the venture after the pair split in 2005.

Art Laboe, Legendary Radio DJ Who Created Oldies But Goodies Format, Dies at 97
Cynthia Littleton Business Editor Art Laboe, the pioneering Los Angeles DJ who championed the Oldies But Goodies format and was revered for sharing on-air dedications with listeners, died Oct. 7 in Palm Springs, Calif. Laboe was the founder of the Original Sound record label and the host of the long-running “Art Laboe Connection” syndicated radio program. He was one of the first DJs to play rock ‘n’ roll and R&B on West Coast radio stations. Just last month, Laboe, who was born celebrated his 79-year anniversary as a radio personality. “My favorite place to be is behind that microphone,” Laboe said at the time. “I have one of the best jobs in the world, playing the music, interacting with our listeners, doing their dedications and connecting them with their loved ones! Thank you to our dedicated fans that have listened through the decades and made ‘The Art Laboe Connection’ a family tradition,” he said.

David Nevins Seeks ‘New Horizons’ Amid Seismic Changes for Content Industry and Paramount
Cynthia Littleton Business Editor It’s showtime for David Nevins – for him and for the business he helped transform over the past dozen years.  Nevins, who announced his resignation Thursday as chairman and CEO of Paramount Premium Group and chief creative officer of Paramount+ Scripted Series, cited the evolution of Showtime’s financial underpinnings as among the highlights of his tenure. Over the past few years, as the streaming revolution in TV has accelerated, Showtime’s business model has shifted from entirely wholesale to MVPDs to a “significant” portion of its total revenue coming direct to consumer.  The depth of the change that he helped lead at Showtime and Paramount+ and other parts of Paramount Global were a big part of the reason he decided to make a change in his own career. Nevins will formally exit the Paramount fold at year’s end. As of today, Nevins said he has no specific plans other than to take an extended break from work for the first time in more than 25 years.

ESPN Chief Says Traditional Cable Network Will Remain Despite Direct-to-Consumer Trend
Brian Steinberg Senior TV EditorYour ESPN cable network isn’t going anywhere, even if its audience is.The top executive overseeing the Disney-backed sports giant said Thursday that ESPN’s flagship cable network was likely to remain intact, even as more of its audience gravitates to streaming video and direct-to-consumer outlets. There has been a rising tide of speculation that Disney could work to monetize the millions of dollars it pays in sports-broadcast rights by making more of its sports content available via streaming properties like ESPN+ or Hulu, both of which are showing more games and matches.But Jimmy Pitaro, chairman of ESPN and Disney’s sports-content operations, said he believed the cable network remained a valuable property.

Hulu President Joe Earley Says Streamer Benefits From ‘Complementary’ Relationship With Disney+

While discussing the ongoing trend of subscribers leaving streaming platforms (also known as churn), Earley said he’s noticed one exception to the rule in bundles that Hulu offers alongside access to Disney+ and ESPN+.“The churn is so low on the bundle, so we want as many people to subscribe to it as possible, because they’re happy, they stay longer,” Earley said, before adding that “it is still an unbelievable price of $13.99,” to laughs from the audience.Earley discussed Hulu’s strategy (and perhaps solicited some new subscribers) in conversation with Cynthia Littleton, co-editor in chief of Variety, at the Variety Entertainment Marketing Summit presented by Deloitte.
