A drink-driving paramedic killed a beloved dad-of-five after veering onto the wrong side of the road and crashing into him.

First responder Robert Woodruff, who was off-duty at the time, downed 10 pints of Guinness before getting behind the wheel of his car.

Hull Crown Court heard that the 36-year-old was rushing to get to a barbecue hosted by a female paramedic about seven miles away, which he was not invited to, and in a "monumental lapse of judgement", was constantly checking his phone for messages.

He ended up swerving onto the opposite carriageway, smashing into cyclist Richard Goodwin. The father-of-five, who worked as a property developer and former bank manager, suffered "catastrophic" injuries in the "devastating" smash.
