Orkney child rape victims must still travel to mainland for forensic examination

Child survivors of sexual assault or rape in Orkney must still travel to Aberdeen for forensic examinations, sparking fresh calls from sexual violence campaigners for children’s rights to be met.

Adult victims in the islands are now seen locally but NHS Orkney said here is no provision for young people due to a shortage of specialist staff and an appropriate venue.

In 2017, it was claimed some island rape victims would not report the crime as they had to travel to the mainland by flight or ferry without washing to be examined.Police urge rape survivors not to wash, drink or eat before they have an examination as vital trace evidence can easily be lost.
