The Conservatives would lose five seats in Greater Manchester if an election were held now, according to a new poll. The party has eight seats in the region, but would keep just three.
YouGov modelling suggests the Tories would lose all but three of 88 so-called “battleground” seats, including many of the 2019 Red Wall gains, if a general election were called.
Among the seats predicted to swing to Labour are the high profile Conservative gains of Leigh and Heywood and Middleton. Both traditional Labour heartlands, the constituencies turned blue in 2019 as Boris Johnson swept to a landslide election win.
But pollsters predict that Sir Keir Starmer's party could reclaim both seats as the Prime Minister continues to be haunted by the cost of living crisis and the aftermath of Partygate.
