New golf club run by South Ayrshire Council hailed as 'landmark' for sport

South Ayrshire Golf Club' has been set up to attract first-time members and families.Council bosses say their aim is to grow the sport and make it more accessible to all.Its formation has drawn criticism from some leading figures on the municipal scene, who claim current clubs could be disadvantaged.But despite a bitter war of words, the new club has now formally launched with more than 180 members already on board.And more than 100 of those are in the process of obtaining a golfing handicap for the first time.

The new format will allow men, women and juniors the opportunity to compete together in the same competition. Karin Sharp, chief operating officer at Scottish Golf, insists the new model will offer "flexibility" for players.
