A new online petition is calling on the UK Government to introduce a ‘national digital Blue Badge’ after a council in London recently introduced an electronic version of the permit to prevent thieves from stealing them.

Petition creator Brian Putman proposes that number plate reading technology used by police to validate insurance - Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) - could also be used to determine if a car is linked to a registered Blue Badge holder.

He explained: “RingGo is an app that is used throughout the UK, Europe and the World to determine if a vehicle has a permit to park.

There is no reason apart from lack of initiative why a national ‘e’- Blue Badge scheme cannot be implemented. The Government should make use of best practices to introduce a national scheme.”The obvious issue with this proposal is that a Blue Badge is issued to a person, not a vehicle.
