Mum tells of daughter's 'nightmare' cancer diagnosis as inspirational teen stars alongside celebs for special film

An Ayrshire mum has said that her daughter kept smiling through a nightmarish cancer battle.Abbe Ferguson was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in December 2019 but maintained a positive outlook throughout her treatment.The 14-year-old Kilmarnock girl spent nine months in hospital in Glasgow, mostly in strict isolation due to the risk of infection.In April 2020, doctors explained that Abbe’s best chance of survival was a stem cell transplant.This meant searching the stem cell register for a match to Abbe’s tissue type.And days after her 13th birthday the teenager received the best present as a perfect match was found in Europe.The donor’s cells were then flown across the Channel to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow.Abbe had conditioning treatment to kill off her bone marrow in preparation for receiving the donor’s healthy cells, designed to reboot her immune system and stop leukaemia cells from growing again.The transplant of stem cells which was administered in to Abbe’s bloodstream through a drip went ahead on June 2, 2020.And by January 2021 , blood tests showed Abbe was in remission.Mum Lynn said: “Life as we knew it stopped after we were given the devastating news that Abbe had cancer.

It was a nightmare but Abbe has stayed smiling through a really tough few years. She’s back at school now and is doing well."Now inspirational Abbe has been chosen to star in a special online film celebrating the courage of kids diagnosed with cancer.Starring alongside big celebs such as singer and songwriter Pixie Lott, TV personalities Dr Ranj and Joe Tasker, and TikTok stars Flossie Clegg, Lewys Ball and Olivia Neill, Abbe was among 15 youngsters from across the UK to take part in the virtual awards show.Hosted by
