A much-loved dad-of-four took his own life, an inquest heard. Craig Vernel, 38, was found unresponsive at his grandad’s home in the Higher Folds area of Leigh, on September 25 last year.

During an inquest into his death at Bolton Coroners' Court, his widow Emma said that after leaving school, Mr Vernel served in the Navy for five-and-a-half-years, before becoming a mechanic. Mrs Vernel told the inquest he loved rugby union and played for Leigh RUFC. She described him as ‘crackers’ and ‘a bit of a joker’, but also as someone who was ‘very loved’.

A GP’s report revealed Mr Vernel was initially diagnosed with depression in 2017. Mrs Vernel mentioned an incident in 2019 in which Mr Vernel had attempted to take his own life, before he agreed to get counselling.
