Moment Manchester councillor heckled as 'traitor' after Walk for Women march

A south Manchester councillor was heckled by anti-trans protesters at an International Women’s Day march over the weekend. On Saturday (March 9), hundreds of women marched through Manchester City Centre to raise awareness of the fight for gender equality as part of the Walk for Women event.

As the march reached its end point at Manchester Cathedral, a number of people took the opportunity to speak in front of the gathered crowd.

Councillor Becky Chambers, who represents Withington for Labour, was amongst one of those to take the microphone following the march, where she mentioned the difficulties all women face.

During the speech, the councillor, who is also Manchester Council's lead member for women, added support for ‘women of colour, disabled women, non-binary people and trans women’. READ MORE: The one-woman publisher from Manchester named the best in the North with prestigious award Her comments were met with cheers from the audience as she added: “We all fight together today, and always, to say it’s not good enough and we demand better for ourselves.” But following the speech, the councillor was heckled by a group of women as she took part in an interview with Victoria Maddock, a first year student for English and Multimedia Journalism at Manchester Metropolitan University.
