A preliminary 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck Southern California on Friday night at approximately 11:38 p.m. According to the official Twitter account for the U.S.

Geological Survey (USGS), the quake targeted an area two miles west of El Monte and 10 miles from Los Angeles. Early results indicated "relatively deep depth" of 16.9 kilometers.

Following the quake, the Los Angeles Fire Department assessed the city for structural damage and issued a warning for residents in L.A.

to prepare for aftershocks. Early Saturday, an update from the USGS read, "Now that it's properly morning... Last night's M4.5 appears to be another of the deep, 'high stress drop' quakes that we sometimes see in the Los Angeles area.
