Little Angel's delight as she wins engineering award with emotions design

A Paisley schoolgirl won a prestigious competition thanks to her caring design to help with children’s emotions.Angel Baxter is a P4 pupil at Todholm Primary and the school took part in the Leader’s Award Engineering Competition.It asked pupils across Scotland ‘If you were an Engineer, what would you do?’Don't miss the latest headlines from around Renfrewshire.

Sign up to our newsletters here.And out of 33,000 entries from the West of Scotland, Angel’s design of an emotions keyring which could be squeezed when you feel stressed or anxious, was the judges' choice.Class teacher Gillian Struthers said: “We are all incredibly proud of Angel’s achievement.

This is a prestigious award and there were thousands of entries.“We’ve entered a few years in a row but never had a winner.“It’s such a thoughtful and kind creation that could really have an impact and help someone.”The competition encourages pupils from primary and secondary schools across the UK to look at the world around them and find engineered solutions to common problems.As part of the competition, pupils interview engineering professionals, identify a problem and design a solution to it enabling them to be inspired by engineering professionals and ‘find the engineer they could be’ by designing the future of engineering.There were over 33,000 entries and Angel, who's eight, was the P4 winner.

She attended Strathclyde University for the awards ceremony and was given a plaque and certificate to mark her achievement.The competition organisers may choose one design to create over the next 12 months meaning Angel’s design could become reality.Todholm Depute Head Teacher David Rigmand said: “One of our school values is aspiration and we are very focussed on STEM at Todholm
