Hugh Dennis has said that he’s ‘sad’ but remains ‘proud’ as Mock the Week begins its last ever season on the BBC. The comedian and actor, 60, has appeared as a team captain on the topical stand-up show ever since it began in 2005 – more than 200 episodes have been broadcast since then.

The series featured many household names, including series regulars Frankie Boyle and Russell Howard, and has also featured the likes of Michael McIntyre, Rhod Gilbert, and Sarah Millican.

Now, as the Dara O’Briain-hosted series gears up to broadcast its last ever series, the Outnumbered star has said the last 17 years have made him ‘proud’. ‘[I’m] quite sad, although after 17 years you have to be proud of the fact that we have had such a long run.

It is very, very unusual that a show runs for that long,’ he said. Reflecting on how the show has changed over the years, Hugh recalled just how different the show was when it started out: ‘There were far more bits – there were various improv games, every panel member had to do stand-up. ’He continued: ‘There was a much longer Scenes We’d Like to See [round] at the end, so I think I was rather daunted by the amount of stuff we all had to do and wondered whether it would work. ’But he says, the members of the panel quickly found their stride, and the show was soon a success: ‘It became clear pretty fast that it [worked] though, although I don’t think any of us would have predicted that it would still be going 17 years later. ’Speaking to Metro.
