HM Revenue and Customs ( HMRC ) has updated its online guidance to explain why claimants may be charged a penalty of up to £3,000.
Penalties can be imposed for a number of reasons, however, HMRC states clearly that it does so to encourage people to be careful and make sure their Tax Credit claims are right in the future, to stop customers from giving them wrong information and to penalise people who try to defraud the system.
HMRC can also charge customers a penalty of up to £300 for failing to give them information or telling them about certain changes of circumstances within one month of it happening.
