Schools across Greater Manchester have announced closures and early finish times amid the heatwave. Extreme temperatures have been affecting the region, where a rare red weather warning is in place until Tuesday night.

We reported earlier how schools said they were putting measures in place to prepare for the unprecedented heat. This included moving pupils out of classrooms and cancelling PE lessons.

But for some schools have now decided to either shorten the school day, or keep pupils at home altogether. Asking for children to arrive for 8.30am, it said in a letter to parents: "We know that the classrooms get hotter in the afternoon and so we will be closing the school early, at 1.30pm, on Monday and Tursday." Lime Tree Primary Academy, in Sale Moor, Trafford, is also closing from 12 noon on Tuesday, with Trafford Council saying it was an 'operational decision' taken by the leadership and Bright Futures Educational Trust.
