A former top cop who once argued for an end to short prison sentences has been put in charge of the taskforce aiming to end Scotland's drugs death crisis.
David Strang, who served as chief constable of Lothian & Borders constabulary until 2013, was confirmed in the post today after the previous occupant resigned.
The Record revealed last month how Professor Catriona Matheson walked out on the Scottish Drugs Death Taskforce (DDTF) amid claims SNP ministers were forcing the body to rush its work.
It was established in January last year to help lead the fightback against the public health crisis that sees more people die from drugs in Scotland per head of population than anywhere else in Europe.
