So, why not just store them together in the same place? Well, that might not exactly work because onions release ethylene gas, which causes potatoes to sprout."It's crucial to keep potatoes distinctly segregated from onions, garlic, and tomatoes, as they exude ample amounts of ethylene gas.
This hormone accelerates ripening and enhances flavour but is also responsible for inducing premature sprouting in potatoes.
