An elderly couple have been conned out of £25,000 by cruel scammers who turned up at their home pretending to be police detectives.The pensioners were duped by the bogus callers who told them they were investigating fraud when they visited their home in Bridge of Weir on Friday.The twisted fraudsters even had convincing ID badges, which led to the couple being conned to handing over the five-figure sum of cash.The couple had received a call from the conmen earlier that day, during which they told them they were from their bank's fraud department and advised that their bank account had been compromised.They were then told that police would attend their address later that day.Don't miss the latest headlines from around Renfrewshire.

Sign up to our newsletters here.Members of the public are now being urged to be vigilant of the elaborate banking scam that is sweeping its way across Scotland.Between October last year and last month, more than 30 reports have been received from members of the public across the country who have either been visited or contacted by individuals claiming to be from Police Scotland.A staggering £300,000 has been stolen from members of the public who have fell victim to the fraud.

Superintendent Campbell Wallace said: “Whoever these men were, they were not genuine Police Scotland officers. They were at the property for some time and even showed ID badges, which we believe to be fake. “Unfortunately, in this case the scammers took £25,000 and we are asking people to be vigilant in relation to this kind of fraud. "If you receive this kind of contact, ask for the officer’s details and which department they work for.
