Earlier this month, a planning application was submitted by social housing provider Great Places to turn the Grade II-listed Ancoats Dispensary on Old Mill Street into a block of 39 apartments.

The Dispensary dates back to 1828 when it was built to treat the impoverished workers of the area. The hospital was immortalised in both an LS Lowry painting and the novel Mary Barton by writer Elizabeth Gaskell.

It closed in 1989 and has fallen into disrepair. Local people rallied to save it from demolition and the Ancoats Dispensary Trust had hoped to restore
