Child Benefit is a regular payment that can be claimed by anyone who is responsible for raising a child and helps with the cost of looking after them.

For an eldest or only child, recipients currently receive £21.15 per week and for any additional children, £14.00 per week. The money is usually paid every four weeks either on a Monday or a Tuesday, although some people can arrange to receive the payment weekly if they are a single parent or if their partner is getting certain benefits, such as Income Support.

The benefit comes to a stop on August 31, on or after your child’s 16th birthday if they leave approved education or training, but, there are several changes in circumstances which can affect your Child Benefit payments.

Parents and guardians must also tell the Child Benefit Office about any changes to their family life - if you don't, you may not get all the money you’re entitled to, or may be overpaid and have to pay it back.
