Hashem Abedi alleged he was tortured after his arrest in Libya and that £9m changed hands before he was extradited to the UK.

Abedi was held by militiamen in the north African country after his brother Salman detonated his suicide bomb at the Manchester Arena.

And, in legal arguments before the start of his criminal trial, Abedi claimed the local paramilitaries grilled him with questions which could only have come from the police investigation in Manchester - and forced him to endorse a 40-page confession, which he had neither written nor read, with his fingerprint.

The Old Bailey heard the unproven allegations during legal argument as part of a failed defence bid to have the entire case thrown out before it started.
