Viewers of BBC's Who Do You Think You Are? were left reaching for the tissues as an overwhelmed Vicky McClure delved into the distressing past of her great-grandfather, who suffered unimaginable horrors in a World War II Japanese prisoner of war camp in Taiwan.The Line of Duty star endured a 17-hour journey to Asia to uncover the haunting truths about Harry Millership - her maternal grandfather's plight after he was ensnared in the Fall of Singapore alongside 130,000 other soldiers in 1942.
Prior to the war, Harry had started work as a coal miner in Yorkshire at a young age of 14, dedicating 18 years to the job. Vicky teared up when she learned of Harry's dreadful voyage to Singapore by sea in 1942, lasting 70 days, before his involvement in what is remembered as one of the starkest losses for the Allies during WWII, reports the Express.
Eight months before his capture, Harry's ordeal was exacerbated on a nightmare journey to Taiwan aboard a "hell ship" crammed with men languishing from both hunger and sickness.
A visibly distressed Vicky said: "The reason I'm an actor, it's because I've got a very vivid imagination and sometimes I battle with that and I think I'm battling with it here.
