A Girvan café is in the running for a national gong for its à la bark dog menu. The New Café Royale, on Dalrymple Street, has been entered into this year’s DogFriendly Awards for its extensive dog menu - complete with doggy beer and ice-cream.Owner Michelle Thomson, 41, realised her dreams of opening her own café in May last year after calling it a day on her career in the whisky industry. And after making the move to Girvan with her husband and six-year-old Cockapoo Poppy, she decided to open up the doors of the revamped café to four-legged friends as well as their humans. She said: “We’ve got our own wee dog and we thought let’s just make it dog friendly and see how it goes.“We don’t have any hassle at all from dogs, everybody loves coming in.”The café’s barking mad menu serves up treat pots and main meals from wholesaler Sir Woofchester’s, whose snacks and dinners are wolfed down by Michelle’s furry customers.

Paw-some pups can order ‘bark burgers’ and ‘bark bangers’ treat pots, or opt for a main meal of a roast dinner and fish and chips.Michelle said: “We always give water and complimentary biscuits to tables when dogs are here.

Then I started doing doggy ice-cream and was just looking for somebody who did something different.“With the fish and chips, there’s actually chips in it, it’s the most bizarre thing!

It’s salmon and trout that’s in it and sweet potato fries with peas. They do sell, and it brings a bit of character to the place.“The first day we promoted the menu the place was mobbed with dogs.
