Former Manchester United striker and Derby County manager Wayne Rooney has distanced himself from the prospect of replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford.

United, following Saturday's 4-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road, decided to sack Solskjaer on Sunday morning, with the defeat in Hertfordshire marking a fifth defeat in the Reds' last seven Premier League matches.

The Norwegian had reached the point of no return and was booed by some sections of the away end when he approached them to applaud and thank them for their support.

Michael Carrick, who is a former team-mate of Rooney's, has been placed in temporary charge whilst the Reds look to appoint an interim manager, who will take the club through until the end of the season.
