And so what I wanted to do was honor her and not the perception of what Black women are supposed to be.”The First Lady, a 10-episode series that debuts April 17 on Showtime, tells the story of American history through the eyes of Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Obama.“It was always about trying to track through history the sublimation of voice, and to turn the lens on history to see it through a female point of view,” said Cathy Schulman, the series’ showrunner and executive producer. “And so it was important to see continuity of the issues and to be able to point out the similarities as well as the juxtaposition.
