Union leaders have united to call for plans to reopen schools from this week to be halted, warning that pupils and teachers will be put at a “significant and imminent risk.”In a joint letter signed by local branches of the EIS, Unison, GMB and Unite trade unions, chiefs say moves to bring pupils transitioning from nursery and primary school to the next stages into the classrooms would involve a group of 2000 children and parents.

They accuse the council of “rushing through” the arrangements without proper risk assessment.The joint union statement says: “The support for pupils transitioning between nursery and primary 1, and for pupils moving from primary 7 to secondary 1, will involve the mobilisation of around 2000 pupils and parental.
