A dad-of-two from Rochdale has reportedly been shot dead in Pakistan after travelling to the country to 'surprise his family.' Tasaraf Hussain was killed shortly after leaving Islamabad International Airport on Monday (January 8), according to Tony Lloyd, the MP for Rochdale.

Mr Lloyd said he and Coun Neil Emmott, the leader of Rochdale council, had written to the Foreign Office and Dr Muhammad Faisal, the High Commissioner of Pakistan to the UK, urging them to investigate Mr Hussain's death and "ensure the murderers are brought to justice". "Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and both Cllr Neil Emmott and I have written to the UK Foreign Office and the Pakistan Ambassador to look into this with urgency and outline what action will be taken to bring the murderers to justice." Mr Lloyd said that Mr Hussain - who he described as "an overseas British Kashmiri" - was visiting his homeland to surprise his family when he was shot dead.

In a statement issued via Mr Lloyd's office, Mr Hussain's relatives said: "His life was cut short in an act of senseless violence that could have been prevented with proper supervision and security measures on commonly travelled routes." Following Mr Hussain's death, his loved ones set up a petition calling on the Pakistani government to "investigate and prevent violence against overseas Kashmiris".
