Microsoft president Brad Smith has said the company doesn’t “see a viable path” to buying Activision Blizzard without its Call Of Duty series, warning regulators that any concessions of the like could “kill” the deal.Currently, the proposed £50billion acquisition is facing resistance from European, US and UK regulators, with a number of watchdogs pushing for Microsoft to make concessions for the deal to pass. Double Fine and 2 Player Productions have released a 22-hour documentary series that charts the making of Psychonauts 2.Titled Double Fine PsychOdyssey, the 32-part series follows Double Fine as it works on platform-adventure game Psychonauts 2, which was released in 2021. The series is a follow-up to Double Fine Adventure, which documented the creation of Broken Age.“Ten years after the release of their flagship video game Psychonauts, Double Fine Productions returns to its most celebrated franchise with Psychonauts 2,” reads the documentary’s description.

The Axis Unseen, an upcoming horror hunting sim from a former developer at Bethesda, promises to be “five times bigger than Skyrim.”That’s according to the game’s developer, Nate Purkeypile, speaking to PCGamesN. Purkeypile left Bethesda in 2021, after a 14-year stint at the company as an artist, with experience working on multiple Fallout Games, Skyrim and the upcoming Starfield.Purkeypile’s new project, The Axis Unseen, is an open-world FPS in which players are tasked with hunting down various monsters from ancient folklore, with the aid of an elemental bow.

Activision Blizzard illegally retaliated against unionising workers at Raven Software by withholding raises, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has found.Via The Washington Post, the labour board found that Activision Blizzard withheld raises from quality assurance (QA) testers at Raven Software, which it attributed to their union activities.Following these findings, Activision Blizzard and Raven Software QA testers will continue negotiations around a collective bargaining agreement. If the two parties cannot agree on terms, the NLRB could file a complaint.

Square Enix could be opening a new studio in the West.The application appeared on the database last week on August 17 where it was filed, created and formalised, and it currently appears to be pending  (via VGC).It looks like the new Western studio will be called Studio Onoma and will focus on developing and “publishing of computer game software and video game software.”The application also includes additional details for the services and goods the studio will provide, such as strategy guides, posters, casual clothing, toys, games, and playthings, “namely action figures, [and] handheld battery-operated games”. Square Enix Newco Limited is listed as the trademark applicant, which is a recently established company in London, England.Earlier this month, it was reported that Square Enix is looking to sell off stakes in Western studios in a bid to “improve capital efficiency.” This follows the sale of Crystal Dynamics and Eidos to Embracer Group back in early May. It will include four companion decks and four collector boosters, and is planned to launch in the third quarter of 2023.Additionally, Universes Beyond has been created with Doctor Who‘s next season in mind – meaning that Ncuti Gatwa’s upcoming stint as the Doctor will be included, along with villains that haven’t appeared on the show yet.Besides Universes Beyond, Wizards Of The Coast also used the Wizards Presents showcase to elaborate on upcoming sets for Lord Of The Rings and Warhammer.The Lord Of The Rings set, titled The Lord Of The Rings: Tales Of Middle Earth, is set to launch in the third quarter of 2023.

Stalker 2-themed supermarket is set to permanently open in Kyiv.Created as a partnership between Stalker 2 studio GSC Game World and Silpo (a chain of Ukrainian stores who specialise in themed shopping experiences), the store opened yesterday (August 16).According to a statement on Facebook, creators said: “For us, this is an important event and a kind of symbol of the vitality of Ukrainians”.They go on to say how the idea came about last summer after Silpo met the “incredible, like-minded people from GSC Game World, with whom we developed the design in collaboration.” However the invasion of Ukraine by Russia “overturned all our plans but the people of Kyiv need products [now] just as much as last year.”[

Phageborn by developer Games Revolted.Phageborn is a free card game that’s set to re-launch in Steam Early Access on August 23, as part of Gamescom.Phageborn‘s twist on standard card games is that players must choose one of four factions with “a unique set of innovative mechanics and exciting play-styles,” along with a variety of Avatars that can be assigned to each deck.Within matches, Phageborn follows a two-lane system that means players will need to choose which part of the playing field they summon their units onto. Players will also be able to upgrade their Avatar each turn, which can unlock powerful abilities to use.There are currently 16 Avatars listed on Phageborn‘s website, along with four factions.

Faze Clan’s Nicholas “Nickmercs” Kolcheff has directly responded to TwitchCon’s recent mask and COVID vaccine mandate by saying a Faze event will be doing the opposite.Kolcheff’s statement comes as both Faze Clan and Twitch are holding events in San Diego, California this month, with TwitchCon recently reversing its policy on no masks or vaccination documents after backlash.“Masks will be required indoors, as well as either proof of vaccination or a negative covid test,” said Twitch. “Let’s make the ultimate squad up safe and accessible for everyone.”Within 30 minutes of Twitch’s statement on the same day (August 12), Kolcheff quote tweeted Twitch saying Faze Clan’s event would have “no mask requirements, [and] no vaccine requirements,” (via Eurogamer).The MFAM and I will be doin’ our thing down in SD, it’ll be poppin’ all weekend.
