The cost of living crisis has seen many families struggle with the price of everyday necessities, such as petrol and electricity bills.
The rising cost of food in particular has been difficult to ignore - and it's only set to get worse. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released new figures this morning stating that inflation - the overall increase in prices over time - has reached a 40-year high.The Consumer Prices Index inflation (CPI) jumped from 9.4% in June to 10.1% in July, meaning we're getting less value for money on the things we buy.The increase was worse than expected for July, with the cost of food the main reason behind the rise, according to the ONS.Certain types of food and everyday essentials were hit the hardest by price increases - here's everything you should be aware of.
According to the ONS, the price of food and non-alcoholic beverages has made a massive contribution to the rise of inflation.
The foods that have risen the most in price are:YoghurtsBread and cereal as well as milk, cheese and eggs increased in price the most, contributing 0.04 percentage points to the rise in inflation last month.Meats, vegetables and chocolate were also among the worst food types hit by soaring costs, contributing 0.03 percentage points to the inflation rise.ONS chief economist Grant Fitzner said: "Food prices rose notably, particularly bakery products, dairy, meat and vegetables, which was also reflected in higher takeaway prices"Price rises in other staple items, such as pet food, toilet rolls, toothbrushes and deodorants also pushed up inflation in July."Inflation can be described as the general increase in price of certain goods and services within our economy.It can change all the time, as prices tend
