'Starving myself is best outcome' says MND Scot fighting for the right to die

Gerald Sutherland believes passionately that he should have the power to end his own life when the time comes. Diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) two years ago, he is aware the clock is ticking as the illness takes away more of his independence and vital functions.

The former welder, 70, goes to bed at night not knowing if he’ll be able to walk or talk the next day. Gerald, from Kirkinner in Wigtownshire, lived for years in The Netherlands with wife Anita, who is Dutch.

He could go there for an “assisted suicide” but wouldn’t want Anita to be charged with assisting a death when she gets back to Scotland.
