Mountain team heroes made 112 rescues as Scots headed for hills amid pandemic

Scotland’s busiest mountain rescue team had a near-record year in 2021 as more people took to the hills in the pandemic. Rescuers in Lochaber dealt with 112 emergencies last year and only 12 were unrelated to the hills.

In 2020, they dealt with about 80 rescues.John Stevenson, leader of Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, said, which usually attracts 160,000 people a year.The team also dealt with about six fatalities, including two last month.Stuart Baillie, 60, from Bo’ness in Stirlingshire, is believed to have plunged nearly 500ft on Aonach Mor after going missing on December 20.The team also found the body of a man in Glen Nevis on Christmas Day.Officers in Lochaber have confirmed it to be Sandy Stewart, 55, who lived in the Falkirk area.
