A masters student left a terrified family considering life under new identity after a blackmail death plot enforced by threats from a Chinese people-trafficking gang.
Yongqin Gu, 27, who was studying computer technology at Strathclyde University, recruited a social media friend to help with the transportation of cash from Glasgow to Newcastle.
Newcastle Crown Court heard the victim's involvement led to threats his leg would be removed, his mother would be shot in the head and the family home would be targeted by Fujian gang bosses.
The family were forced to flee their home and have considered resettling in a country away from the UK, with fake identities, in a bid to ensure their safety.
