Emilio was surrounded by his family when he died. Emilio had recently been in a hospice care after he was diagnosed with the blood cancer Multiple myeloma back in December 2020. “A beloved member of the Sesame family for over 50 years, his warmth and humor invited children to share a friendship that has echoed through generations,” a rep for Sesame Street shared in a statement with People. “At the forefront of representation, Emilio proudly laid claim to the ‘record for the longest-running role for a Mexican-American in a TV series,’” the statement continued. “We are so grateful he shared his talents with us and with the world.” Emilio joined Sesame Street as Luis back in 1971 and, besides a brief hiatus in 1988, remained on the show until 2016.

He continued appearing with the show’s cast at public events and returned for Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2019. Emilio is survived by his wife Carole, his son Aram, and his daughter Lauren.
