ScotRail has increased their prices today which will now see fares increase by 8.7 per cent.Confirming the rise in December 2023, Transport Scotland said it was "no longer sustainable" to continue with freezing the prices - a decision which was made as part of their response to the cost of living crisis.The price hikes will come into effect from April 1.
In addition to ScotRail, Caledonian Sleeper fares increased on average by 8.7 per cent on January 1, excluding seated tickets, while the ScotRail peak fares removal pilot has been extended by three months.
Initially due to last until the end of April, it will now finish in June 2024.In a bid to ensure rail services are sustainable in the longer term and budgets align with the overall funding available, Ministers are said to have "agreed these fares after lengthy consideration".Fiona Hyslop, Minister for Transport explained: “The Scottish Government rightly made the decision to freeze flexi-pass and season ticket prices as part of its response to the cost-of-living crisis.
While this has now remained in place for almost two years, it is simply no longer sustainable." “From 1 April 2024, all ScotRail fares will increase by 8.7%.
