Schoolgirl who is honouring late brother with charity work wins award

A youngster who is devoted to honouring her late brother with her charity work has been named the Young Inspirational Renfrewshire Citizen at a new awards ceremony.Renfrewshire Inspirational Awards were set up to help celebrate the very best in the community.And 12-year-old Mariya Javed was the joint winner of the young person’s award after her work with charity, Another Star in the Sky, which was set up by her parents after her brother Ahmar tragically passed away in 2017, aged just 13.

She won alongside the anti-bullying charity, I Am Me Scotland kids.Ahmar was born with the condition arteriovenous malformation which meant his blood vessels and veins were tangled.

It had been undiagnosed until he suffered a bleed on the brain at karate practice in April 2017. He passed away ten days later.His devastated parents Sameena and Javed set up Another Star in the Sky, which aims to fund research into rare diseases and help support child bereavement services and create a positive legacy for Ahmar.The couple live in Elderslie with Mariya and younger brother, Mohammad Ayaan, who was born in 2018.Don't miss the latest headlines from around Renfrewshire.

Sign up to our newsletters here.Mariya was nominated for the award by her English teacher at Castlehead High School, Claire Anderson.She said: “Mariya deserves this award as she and her family have had to endure the incredibly difficult shock and grief of losing their family member so suddenly, and yet have still found the strength to channel this grief into something which will help others.“Mariya was only seven years old when she lost her brother and has been committed to honouring her brother and her charity work ever since.“She has helped to raise over £15,000 for Another Star
