Rio Ferdinand teams up with Amazon to make footy docs probing issues such as race and sexuality in the game

HE’S already made a string of hit documentaries for the BBC – now former footballer Rio Ferdinand is stepping in front of the camera again, this time with Amazon.

The former Manchester United and England star turned telly pundit is currently making a trio of football-based investigations for the streaming giant.

The shows could be released later this year. Rio will look at key issues within the sport — race, mental health and sexuality — and interview a number of high-profile figures within the game.

A TV insider said: “This is quite a prestige project for Rio and he has spent the best part of a year working with the documentary makers to produce some in-depth television. “Rio obviously has experience of race within football, but the other two areas he has less experience of.
